Man, that's a cool exhibit to have in an airport!
That's awesome! They recently dug a 1" tape machine out from the storage room at work to dub old clips of our sports director who is retiring after 24 years into the Avid system. Surprisingly, it still works!

Actually, to my surprise, my current station still maintains 2 working 3/4" Umatic machines for dubbing of old archived news footage onto either DVC-Pro or into the Avid Unity.

Standing ovation huh? I guess no one from the NFL, NBA or MLB was there. Dolby was a genius, no doubt.
hm, i never knew this was in SFO. I usually went straight to my flight though.

My uncle,Charles Ginsburg, led the team at Ampex which included Ray Dolby which invented this machine.

The old AMPEX sign is still on the west side of 101 in Redwood City. It's a terrific company that is still producing recorders and selling them around the world. We are now marketing solid state recorders to aviation companies. We are a lot smaller now than we were in the 50's and 60's. Stop by for a tour if you are in town and have an hour. I am always on the look out for you, Kevin Rose and the rest of the old Call for Help TV/ celebs.

Thanks for mentioning us.

Great history. Love to see more pictures if you get a chance. As an ex-radio guy myself, I first learned to edit with a razor blade and a grease marker. Oh the good ol' days!
